ICE(MAN) IS BACK?
Butcher Billy - music x comics = cool
Marvel Superheroes re-imagined as '80s punk, post-punk and new wave icons.
Following on from his earlier series of Post-Punk 'Super Friends', illustrator and New Wave obsessive Billy has returned to his favourite theme of dressing up the likes of The Smiths and Joy Division in super suits.'

Michal Krasnopolski - a man of simple taste.
He says of his range of poster designs:
Simple and clever. I struggled with the Pulp Fiction image for some reason, but thankfully not with the Jaws one. Thanks to Amy Li for this find (blame her for any related projects ;-)

THE RETURN OF THE BLOG(I)
Wasted Youth by Pete McKee
Just realised I've never added Pete McKee and he's a local hero and one of my favorites.
He may not be the most experimental illustrator you'll ever see but he is consistently good and usually engaging. He's been working away in Sheffield doing illustrations for shops, bars and nightclubs for donkeys years and now he has his own Gallery on Sharrowvale road and the recognition he deserves.
Only just got around to adding someone new as I'd lost my password.

Architectural illustration by Jonathan Wilkinson
This fella has drawn most of the great buildings in Sheffield and lots more across the North of England.
The 2D illustrations of the Roxy and Park Hill are fantastic. It's a real shame to be reminded of some of the weird and quirky buildings that have been demolished, like the 'Egg box' and the 'Wedding cake'.

Charles Burns is an American illustrator who creates graphic novels, book covers and animations.
Burns started his career in comics working mostly for Raw magazine with Art Spiegelman.
He usually works in black and white but this cover of the Godfather of Punk's book of dreams is a winner.
His best work is his collected series 'Black Hole' which has been resleased as a graphic novel.
Like Raymond Pettibon, he is widely acclaimed as one of the best American counter culture artists working today. He creates album artwork for many alternative music artists.
He recently made an interesting music video for Fever Ray.

Dirty Harry poster designed by Olly Moss
At first glance I thought that this was an original poster from the 1970's, but after researching Olly Moss more it seems it is part of a range of modern posters all made using the same colours and techniques.
Great use of a limited colour palette and some of the designs use clever graphic elements (Clint Eastwood’s face is made from the negative space of his Magnum) and some shadows form multiple images (Rocky’s arms being help high in silhouette as part of the steps he runs up in the famous montage, training scene.
Have a look at the rest of these posters via the link. My favourites are the Dirty Harry and the Robocop ones, although the Saul Bass Influenced Rocky poster is great as well.
or for even more of his stuff (too talented this one, makes you more than a bit jealous)

Star Wars poster designed by Tyler Stout
Possible Drew Struzan influence (as you might expect with these being Star Wars posters).
Again the designer has used a limited amount of colours and this helps you to view the intricate - almost etched – detail.
The Star Wars geek in me loves the fact that he has used the original working title ‘Revenge of the Jedi’ (rather than Return of the Jedi), and this links it in to the last film of the series to be released.

The type looks lino cut and the image reminds me of Spirographs when I was a kid.
Similar to the Olly Moss posters, although I think the influence works the other way.
Had this on my wall at home for several years and I'm still not bored of it.
and this one
the guy pretty much invented Film Title sesquence design with the title for the Frank Sinatra film "The man with the Golden Arm'. The arm motif linking us to the fact that the main character was a drummer, a junkie and a card dealer.

No excuse really. Just like his Illustrations and he has a very poster like style of layout.
He has worked as a concept artwork for many Hollywood movies and has translated some classic stories into sequential artwork. Not to everyones taste but he has experimented with mixed media very effectively in the past.

Olly Moss is a fantastic artist and illustrator. His website portfolio, featuring sketches, graphics, t-shirt designs and illustrations, is a vast field of complete inspiration. I love his dry wit and sarcastic humour mixed with creative designs and bright, eye-catching colours. His creativity knows no bounds, taking advantage of any media presented to him. His understanding of design is clear from the beginning to the end, with each piece surpassing the previous. Moss is a fantastic illustrator, his work test the boundaries of humour and design, resulting in a utterly astounding artist.
there are some really nice/usefull images on here.
I completely agree; Moss disguises outstanding technical ability behind simple but genuniley effective and inspiring imagery and/or symbolism. This shows not only exceptional design skill but also a level of true intelligence and understanding of people and the world around him.
Olly Moss holds a very distinctive style of both design and wit and captivates his audience through his illustrations, apparel design and graphics. I had previously seen some of his alternative movie poster designs in various issues of Empire magazine but never siezed the oppurtunity to browse through his work personally, Until I saw some more of his fantastic imagery on this blog. This inspired me to go through his website and I am glad I did. His sharp and clever humour will stick with me and he is sure to influence me in some of my own work.
Olly Moss' work is a really oustanding display of true design talent. I love the simplistic style of all his posters, in the same way I admire Shepard Fairey's work and the Marian Bantjes/Corey Holms 'Birds' poster. Simplistic pieces like these that tell it like it is without pointless extra imagery and text are, in my opinion, the future of all movie posters.
I very much like the Graphic Novel cover artwork by Bill Sienkiewicz. Comics are a massive interest of mine and I really like how each of the characters connect with the rest of the poster, for example, the Night Crawler is hanging from his tail of a stem of the 'X' in the background.
I think Olly Moss is a great artist his work really influences me his work is really intresting to look at. He is a creative artist with some great pieces of work.
I found Olly Moss's work to be intresting and great to look at, i like how he shows is understanding of things through his work. I like how his work also influences me and helps me when it comes to doing my own pieces of work.
Olly Moss is a brilliant illustrator/artist, his work is so eye-catching; its really inspiring. He has amazing skill, using bright colours and simple designs in all his work.
As wonderful as moss is, and im sure we all agree, i loathe him with an intense passion simply because one, he is so talented and two most of his pieces are stupidly simple and any of us could have done them. I wish i knew weather or not to hate him so for now im staying sweden on the matter.
Tyler Stout produces a range of different illustrations while using one type of media. On Tyler's website there is one illustration that i really like this is "Herja".I like how he has used this layering technquie to make the image stand out more. The way the red has been used to highlight areas of the image.
Shepherd Fairey is a unique and talented designer who's work has inspired me through many projects but I feel although his ideas are different his techniques are very simular. Olly moss because of his use of imagination and techniques his version of the film cover Dirty Harry works really well blending the image and the background together to make one image.
